A year ago today I was near the end of my selection course and now it is just 6 days to go until I leave for South Africa. Scarily close. Since selection it has always felt so far away, and even at the end of training 5 weeks ago it felt along way off, but it is starting to finally feel real. My big rucksack arrived today, and my dad's reaction says it all when he asked what I was using the rucksack for, when I answered with to pack everything in and take on a plane to South Africa he looked a bit shocked, he thought I was taking a big suitcase, how little my dad knows about my year in South Africa is a bit worrying. Saying goodbye to my friend Tara today who leaves tomorrow for Guyana was a very strange feeling, driving away knowing that I wont see her for a whole year made me realise a bit more that this is actually happening, I'm leaving my family and friends and wont see them again for 12 months.
Post from UK to South Africa takes about 10 days if your lucky, according to our post report from previous Mitchell House volunteers (not sure how long it takes if you are unlucky though). If anyone wants to write to me in South Africa the address is Mitchell House, PO BOX 1051, Fauna Park, 0787, Polokwane, South Africa
Next post on this blog will either be sharing the frustration of trying to fit lots of stuff in a rucksack weighing less than 20kg or will be from South Africa...
